Respecting and improving the surrounding environment is paramount for the people at Papaya Playa. Thus they have taken on an ambitious sustainability and social responsibility project to propel themselves as eco-pioneers. Amongst other eco efforts, the hotel treats waste water and recycles it at the onsite plantation that houses banana and coconut trees, as well as a cashew nut orchard.

Papaya Playa Project actively supports the literary advancement of school children in indigenous and mestizo communities in Quintana Roo. They work with Letras Itinerantes AC, an organisation that promotes a love of reading and ensures that literacy rates grow by delivering books and educational materials to schools and communities. Books that feed the imaginations and inspire children who usually have little access to such resources.
