Torel Avantgarde – Porto

Porto, Portugal, From £96

The concept of Torel Avantgarde is based on the building, which dates back to the 1940s ‘New State’ period. Like all the great avant-garde artists, the designers intended to create something completely new. The result is a hotel where art is present everywhere, in every detail. Each of the 47 rooms and suites is dedicated to an avant-garde artist and designed individually.

We adore the idea of staying in a room dedicated to our favourite avante-garde icon. The only problem is: how do we choose between Oscar Wilde, Francis Bacon, Charles Chaplin, Nina Simone and Freud?

Founders’ story

A series of chance meetings brought João, Barbara and Ingrid together. Barbara, an Austrian tourist, visited Joao’s first hotel (Torel Palace) in 2014. So charmed by it, she returned. This time as Joao’s business partner. When Barbara met fellow Austrian and budding hotelier, Ingrid, in the bar of Torel Palace, the triangle was complete. And Torel Avantgarde was born.
