The Finest Green List Spots – Portugal’s Top 3

Kobu's top picks for the city, the coast, and the country | 7th May 2021

Set to be a surprise addition to the green list, Portugal offers the safety of returning to the UK without the need to isolate, as well as normality whilst there. From walled coastal villages to dramatic hilltop fortresses, the ancient kingdom of Portugal is providing an escape from working from home. The upcoming relaxations on travel restrictions, set to be introduced by the Government on May 17, have caused a flurry of long-term bookings for when travel can resume. Up to 30 countries will be placed on a green list, allowing free travel in and out of them.

Though the options are numerous, our first choice is Portugal, mainly for the sheer variety of locations and scenery on offer. To suit all tastes and cover all desires, we’ve picked our favourite city, country and coastal option. These all provide perfect ‘working from home, away from home’ solutions, and do so with style and ease, in true Kobu fashion. Read through our top picks below.

The city dwellers – Torel 1884 Suites & Apartments
Porto

What once was an elegant 19th century palace, the designers of Torel 1884 have perfectly retained its former grandeur, with high ceilings, vast windows, and spacious rooms. This, along with original features like the staircase make it the perfect escape, from one city, to another. A stay here is steps away from Porto’s most popular local hangout, providing an exceptional location for a long stay if its a busy city that is desired.

Porto itself is a bustling city, and one of our favourites in Europe. The capital of port production has grown with a creative twist, giving this historic city a new lease of life. Here, lauded chefs like Pedro Lemos and José Avillez continue to grow the culinary reputation of Porto. This city provides an exceptional escape abroad, with culture in abundance. Enjoy the essence of Portuguese discoveries, like exotic fabrics and spices in the hotel, and the bustling Portuguese city when leaving the inner sanctum of Torel 1884.

The country lovers – Farmhouse of the Palms
São Brás de Alportel

View of the pool with sun loungers and country views

For those seeking a quieter setting, still within easy reach of large towns, a rural escape is the answer. Farmhouse of the Palms provides a perfect sanctuary, for those looking to break away from the homes to which we have been confined for so long. Located 15km from Faro airport, this 300 year old property sits atop a hill, with sprawling views of the countryside and rolling hills. The owners, Frank & Véronique have perfectly restored this beautiful estate, with traditional Portuguese architecture in mind.

Here, one can enjoy the seclusion of a small village, living amongst a carefully curated environment. With only 7 suites, the reputation of this property is incredibly impressive. Farmhouse of the Palms was voted “Best Countryside Lodging in Portugal” in 2019, by Publituris, one of the highest accolades possible for a hotel in Portugal. As a result, this provides the perfect ‘working from home’ location surrounded by tranquility.
