Set between the Yucatán jungle and the Caribbean Sea, Maroma, A Belmond Hotel, is a masterfully restored sanctuary. Originally built in the 1970s by José Luis Moreno, its soulful architecture has been reinterpreted by Tara Bernerd & Partners, a seamless blend of cultural heritage and modern refinement.

With just 72 rooms, suites, and villas, Maroma feels intimate yet expansive, each space a canvas of local artistry. Think hand-painted tiles by José Noé Suro, earthy Saltillo floors from Guadalajara, and soft, curving forms that mirror the rhythm of the jungle outside. Three volcanic Sukabumi-tiled pools shimmer in cenote-inspired hues, inviting quiet reflection. Culinary direction is equally thoughtful: at Casa Mayor, Daniel Camacho elevates Mexican tradition with bold, seasonal flavors, while Curtis Stone channels familial warmth and Mayan roots at Woodend. Anchoring it all is the Maroma Spa by Guerlain, where native botanicals and time-honored rituals create a deeply grounded wellness journey.

What makes it Kobu

Belmond Maroma
Maroma’s aesthetic is a tribute to Mexican craftsmanship and natural elegance. Over 80% of the furnishings are handcrafted by local artisans, from hand-painted tiles by José Noé Suro to custom Saltillo floor tiles and curved wooden finishes that echo the organic flow of the jungle. Interiors by Tara Bernerd & Partners embrace texture, tone, and local identity, fusing vintage charm with refined modernity. Even the staff uniforms, designed by ethical fashion house Collectiva Concepción, are woven from traditional Mexican textiles, reinforcing a sense of place in every detail.
Equally thoughtful is Maroma’s deep commitment to environmental stewardship. The property features a nursery cultivating over 2,000 endemic plants, supports a turtle conservation program, and houses sanctuaries for both native bird species and the revered Melipona bee, an essential part of Mayan culture. The Maroma Spa by Guerlain, the first of its kind in Latin America, incorporates native botanicals and offers bee-inspired treatments, including honey-infused therapies. These efforts transform the resort into a living, breathing ecosystem that honors both the land and its legacy.
